Jeanette Campbell, leyenda de la natación nacional, no solo fue la primera deportista argentina en un Juego Olímpico, sino que también ganó una medalla de plata con récord incluido.
Con el nuevo auge de los Juegos Olímpicos creciendo cada cuatro años y con una conducta machista por parte de las autoridades olímpicas y de la sociedad en general, la participación de las mujeres en los mismos estaba vetada desde la antigüedad: de hecho, en sus orígenes en Grecia, solo las madres de campeones olímpicos podían ingresar a los estadios.
Muchos años más tarde, con Pierre de Coubertin a la cabeza, esta medida de oponerse rotundamente a la participación de la mujer en los Olímpicos se mantuvo hasta el mismo día de su muerte. Argentina, por su parte, no tuvo presencia femenina en los Juegos de 1924, 1928 y 1932; sino que recién hasta 1936 una deportista logró superar esta insulsa barrera.
Jeanette Campbell nació el 8 de marzo de 1916 en la localidad francesa de Saint Jean de Luz. Hija de padre escocés y madre argentina, la familia tuvo a su primera hija en plena Primera Guerra Mundial, por lo que no pudieron escapar de Europa sino hasta 1918, con la guerra terminada, pero con un continente hecho añicos.
Viajaron en barco con destino a Argentina, junto con una gripe que terminó con la vida de 40 personas de esa embarcación. De hecho, Campbell llegó a nuestro país con Mary Gorman, su abuela, quién años más tarde se convertiría en una de las primeras maestras que Domingo Faustino Sarmiento convocó al país.
Ya instalada en su nuevo hogar en el barrio de Belgrano, comenzó a practicar natación en un club local, hasta que en 1936 llegó su oportunidad: el 9 de junio se subió nuevamente a un barco, pero para viajar a Berlín junto con 49 deportistas argentinos hombres y varios dirigentes, también hombres. Gracias a una piscina que tenía el barco, Jeanette entrenaba atada a una soga para llegar a Alemania de la mejor forma. Y tras 21 días, del puerto la enviaron a un alojamiento con otras 25 mujeres de diversos países.
Un fragmento de una nota publicada en Página12 retracta la performance de la franco-argentina en ese inolvidable torneo: “El 8 de agosto comenzó la competencia para ella. Ganó su serie eliminatoria batiendo el récord sudamericano e igualando el olímpico. Al otro día, la historia se repitió: ganó su serie semifinal y volvió a romper la marca sudamericana y la olímpica registrando 1:06:6, venciendo a la holandesa Willy den Ouden, quien había batido el récord mundial dos meses antes. La carrera final de los 100 metros libres fue el 10 de agosto, a las 3 de la tarde y comenzó torcida. Una mala largada la dejó muy atrás, pero logró superar el momento, y llegó a liderar la prueba, pero la holandesa Hendrika Mastenbroek, la pasó en los tramos finales y quedó a solo 5 centésimas del oro. Medalla de plata para Jeanette Campbell, la primera de una mujer, una marca definitiva en la historia del olimpismo nacional”.
De hecho, este segundo puesto no fue lo único por lo que Campbell fue reconocida. En plena Alemania nazi, fue nombrada Reina de la Belleza Berlín 1936 por la prensa acreditada y, según dicen los rumores, llegó hasta a cautivar al mismísimo Adolf Hitler.
Los años pasaron y la familia que llegó a conformar con el entrenador Roberto Pepper también dieron sus frutos en la natación: Susana, la hija del matrimonio, fue una de las nadadoras más importantes de la década del ’60, compitiendo en los Juegos Olímpicos de Tokio 1964, evento donde Jeannette fue abanderada de la delegación.
