29 atletas, que debieron abandonar sus países de origen por conflictos políticos y sociales, formarán parte de esta delegación en los Juegos Olímpicos de Tokio.
En los Juegos Olímpicos de Río 2016, apareció por primera vez el Equipo Olímpico de Refugiados como una de las delegaciones participantes. El mismo estuvo conformado por 10 atletas que, además de lograr las marcas mínimas necesarias para competir a este nivel, cumplan con la condición de refugiado, verificada por las Naciones Unidas.
Es decir, está formado por deportistas que debieron abandonar sus países de origen debido a conflictos sociales y políticos. Ahora, para Tokio 2020, esta delegación será casi el triple de grande de lo que lo fue en la edición pasada de los Juegos, ya que serán 29 los integrantes.
El Comité Olímpico Internacional (COI), durante estos últimos años, les otorgó las Becas para Atletas Refugiados a 55 deportistas que cumplían esta condición. Para participar en los Juegos, no obstante, fueron seleccionados 25 de esos atletas, además de otros 4 integrantes del Proyecto de Refugiados de la Federación Internacional de Judo, que fueron elegidos para completar el equipo mixto de esa disciplina.
Los deportistas del Equipo Olímpico de Refugiados, oriundos de un total de 11 países (Siria y Sudán del Sur los más repetidos), dirán presente en un total de 12 deportes: Atletismo, Badminton, Boxeo, Canotaje, Ciclismo, Judo, Karate, Taekwondo, Tiro, Natación, Halterofilia y Lucha. Entre los 29 nombres, el más reconocido para muchos será el de Yusra Mardini, nadadora siria que ya estuvo en Rio 2016, y que se hizo conocida por su historia: al huir de su país, debió nadar 3 horas en el Mar Egeo, para poder llegar a Europa.
Además de Mardini, se repiten otros 6 nombres con respecto a la pasada edición: los atletas James Nyang Chiengjiek, Paulo Amotun Lokoro, Rose Likonyen, Anjelina Nadai Lohalith (todos de Sudán del Sur), y Yonas Kinde (Etiopía); y el judoca Popole Misenga (República Democrática del Congo). Además, entre los que participarán representando al Equipo de Refugiados por primera vez, hay una medallista olímpica: la iraní Kimia Alizadeh, bronce en Taekwondo en Rio 2016, que abandonó su país debido a las condiciones de opresión. La ex-atleta keniata Tegla Loroupe, quien lograra una medalla de bronce en el Mundial de 1999 en 10.000 m., será la Jefa de Misión del equipo, al igual que lo hizo en 2016. El acrónimo de la delegación será EOR, debido a sus siglas en francés, y cada vez que haya una presentación oficial del equipo (incluyendo, si las hubiera, ceremonias de premiación), flameará la bandera olímpica, y sonará el himno olímpico. Además, durante la ceremonia de inauguración, la delegación será la segunda en desfilar, luego de la griega.
