Siempre le hizo frente a los desafíos, tanto adentro como afuera del ring. Brian Arregui, oriundo de Entre Ríos, cumple este viernes 21 años. Su nombre quedó para siempre en la historia del deporte nacional cuando, el 17 de octubre de 2018, obtuvo la medalla dorada en los Juegos Olímpicos de la Juventud.
El recorrido en aquel inolvidable certamen, llevado a cabo en Buenos Aires, inició con triunfo ante el fuerte uzbeko Rakhmonov por decisión dividida 3-2. En semifinales, y por una particularidad del formato (sistema de repechaje), volvió a enfrentar al púgil asiático con una victoria de idéntico resultado.
Ya en la esperada final, el albiceleste realizó su mejor pelea y superó con calidad al marroquí Elouarz. De este modo Arregui se quedó en lo más alto del podio en la categoría de 69kg. Ese mismo año el joven ganó el Premio Olimpia en su disciplina.
Tras ello, llegó su pasaje a la categoría mayores y sus actuaciones en la selección nacional, con un objetivo claro: acceder a los Juegos Olímpicos de Tokio 2020, los cuales tenían la particularidad de aceptar profesionales en los cuadros.
Esto, sumado a la postergación de la competencia debido a la pandemia del coronavirus, hizo que en la pasada temporada el nacido en Villaguay comience su carrera rentada. Como guiño del destino, el debut fue en el mismo estadio en donde se preparó para Buenos Aires 2018: Mary Terán de Weiss. Allí venció el 11 de diciembre a Maximiliano Recalde (llegaba con récord de 0-1) por KO técnico en el segundo asalto.
Finalmente, Brian Arregui cumplirá su sueño de ser olímpico en Tokyo 2020 ya que obtuvo la plaza tras estar como primer suplente en el ranking del Boxing Task Force (BTF), el argentino ingresó en reemplazó del venezolano Gabriel Maestre, quien decidió no ir a Japón ya que priorizará su carrera profesional
