Gustavo Fernández, emblema del tenis adaptado y referente del deporte paralímpico argentino
El tenista se destacó dentro y fuera de la cancha, supo estar entre los 10 mejores del mundo durante diez años.
Gustavo Fernández nació en Río Tercero, Córdoba, y en su hogar ya se respiraba aire deportivo. Su padre, “El Lobito”, era un más que interesante jugador de básquet. Por eso, cuando “Gusty” sufrió al año y medio un infarto medular el deporte fue un aliado. Porque le sirvió para fijarse objetivos y buscar un sueño, algo que consiguió con mucho esfuerzo a través del tenis sobre silla de ruedas.
Cuando el cordobés se dio cuenta que con su talento podía llegar lejos, se armó de coraje y el ida y vuelta desde Buenos Aires se transformó en una constante. Tenía 13 años y sus entrenadores ya hablaban de un pibe que jugaba bien pero, sobre todo “muy maduro”.
No extrañó, entonces, de la manera en que Gustavo Fernández se acomodó entre los mejores del mundo. Tampoco cuando a los 21 años se quedó con su primer título de Grand Slam. Fue en Wimbledon 2015 y en pareja con el francés Nicolas Peifer.
Al año siguiente, ganó su primer campeonato de los grandes en individuales cuando superó al británico Gordon Reid y besó ese trofeo que tanto añoraba, el de Roland Garros. El mismo que volvería a ganar en 2019 por partida doble, ya que también festejó en dobles.
En su currículum también figuran dos títulos en singles en Australia (2017 y 2019) y otro en Wimbledon (2019), donde también obtuvo el dobles en 2022.
Pero más allá de premios, medallas y trofeos, uno de sus logros inolvidables fue cuando lo eligieron para llevar la bandera argentina en la ceremonia de apertura de los Juegos Paralímpicos de Río 2016. Fernández llevó al tenis argentino sobre silla de ruedas a lo más alto.
Después de más de 10 años como Top Ten del tenis, se convirtió en un referente del deporte paralímpico. Él también lleva la bandera de sus colegas y dice a los cuatro vientos que “hay que naturalizar la discapacidad”. Palabra de un campeón, un embajador argentino por el mundo.
