En Calgary 1988, el equipo de bobsleigh de Jamaica sorprendió al mundo con su participación y espíritu de superación. Así, fue la inspiración para Jamaica bajo cero.
Una isla en pleno Centroamérica y rodeada por el mar Caribe, Jamaica es puro sol y plaza; con poco y nada de frío y, mucho menos, nieve.
Sin embargo, para 1988 se disputaban los Juegos Olímpicos de Invierno en Calgary, Canadá. Y aunque pareciera extraño e imposible, Jamaica estuvo presente en un solo deporte: bobsleigh, tanto en la categoría doble como cuádruple.
Conformado por el capitán Dudley Stokes, el soldado Michael White, el teniente Devon Harris y el ingeniero Chris Stokes, todos militares de profesión, la falta de experiencia y entrenamiento no fue una barrera para que los atletas compitieran en las frías pistas de descenso en trineo.
Stokes y White quedaron últimos (30°), mientras que el cuarteto tuvo un hecho por demás curioso que recorrió el mundo entero: en medio de la prueba, el trineo giró bruscamente en una curva y chocó contra uno de los costados, golpeando al equipo que poco le importó este imprevisto. Se levantaron, lastimados, y con ayuda del equipo técnico y algunos espectadores, cruzaron la meta caminando y tirando del trineo que llevaba a los más afectados.
Con las imágenes en todos los medios del mundo, la historia de los jamaiquinos llegó a Hollywood y, en 1993, se estrenó en cines Cool Runnings (Jamaica bajo cero en Latinoamérica), película que todo argentino conoce y que pocos conocen su verdadera historia.
